ABOUT A. LANGE & SOHNE
A. Lange & Sohne was founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in the city of Glashutte, Germany. In 1868, Ferdinand Lange’s son Richard joins the business and the company becomes A. Lange & Sohne. The watch firm proceeds to make extremely fine pocket watches, and the company’s watches bear the “1A” designation. The watchmaker continued to produce pocket watches and, like many other German watchmakers, produced oversized wristwatches for the German air-force. In 1948, the company’s property was nationalized, and the Lange brand ceased to exist. Walter Lange, then the leader of the company and the great-grandson of the founder, had to flee the country in order to avoid forced labour in the mines. In 1990, following the reunification of Germany, Walter Lange and Günter Blümlein, resurected the company as Lange Uhren GmbH, with the assistance of several other watch manufacturers, such as IWC and Jaeger LeCoultre. The new company re-registered A. Lange & Sohne as its trademark, and was again based in Glashütte. In 1994, it reintroduced a new collection of wristwatches.
